Common console faults, explained

What the symptom usually means, and what it costs to put right.

No picture or "no signal"

Usually a damaged HDMI port from a pulled cable or a drop. Try another cable and TV input first. If it's still blank, we replace the port: £85 for PS5 and Xbox Series X, £75 for Series S, from £65 for PS4, Xbox One and others.

Overheating, loud fan or shutting down

Dust clogs the fan and heatsink, and old thermal paste stops moving heat away from the chip. A clean and re-paste, from £60, usually brings temperatures back down.

Won't turn on

Could be the power supply, the board, or something simpler like a tripped software fault. We find out before quoting. No-power and board-level repairs are from £75.

Disc won't read or eject

Disc drives wear and jam over time. Disc drive repairs are from £70.

Switch won't charge

Usually the USB-C charging port, worn from docking. Charging port repairs are from £70.

Controller drift

Worn sticks. Standard replacement is £20 a stick or £35 for both; the Hall-effect upgrade is £25 a stick or £45 the pair.

Repair or replace?

A new console is a big spend, and a repaired one keeps your games, saves, accounts and accessories just as they were. Port, fan, clean, drive and controller repairs are almost always worth doing. If a console has serious liquid damage, or the repair would cost close to a new one, we'll say so and leave the choice to you.

Keep it running longer

Airflow
Keep vents clear and don't shut it in a closed cabinet while it's on.
HDMI care
Leave slack in the lead and unplug it before moving the console.
Dust
Hoover the vents every few months and get a full internal clean every year or two.

More questions

Is it worth repairing a console?

Usually yes. Ports, fans, cleans and drives cost far less than a new console, and you keep your saves and setup. If a repair isn't worth it, we'll tell you.

How do quotes work?

We test the console with your cable and controller, find the fault and give you a price before any work. Fixed prices are fixed; "from" prices are confirmed after we've had a look.

How do I stop my console overheating?

Keep the vents clear, don't run it in a closed cabinet, hoover the vents now and then, and have it cleaned inside every year or two.

How do I avoid damaging the HDMI port?

Leave slack in the cable, unplug it before moving the console, and push the plug in straight.

Gamers fixing gamers' kit

We build gaming PCs and play games ourselves, so we know how much it hurts when your console dies mid-season. If it's time to move up from console to PC, we can help with that too.

Our repair warranty

Every repair we do is covered by our own warranty, so if the same fault comes back, bring it in and we'll put it right.

HDMI ports, fans, drives, controller sticks and other replacement parts on PlayStation, Xbox and Switch.

3 months on board-level and liquid-damage work

Motherboard and logic board repairs, soldering and micro-soldering, and devices that have had liquid damage.

The warranty covers the part we fitted and our workmanship. It doesn't cover new accidental or liquid damage, or the device being opened up by someone else after our repair. Any questions, email help@thetechheroes.com or call 0333 600 3330.
